Facilitation

A facilitator is someone who:

  • enables groups and organisations to work more effectively
  • promotes inclusive processes, thereby increasing participation
  • helps the group to consider its beliefs and assumptions
  • assists the group in agreeing its main goals and identifying the steps needed to achieve these.

The most important skills and abilities that mark out my facilitation style are:

  • sense of humour
  • excellent interpersonal skills
  • belief in the possibility of win-win agreements
  • keen interest and understanding of group dynamics
  • ability to keep the group on track
  • belief in the right of everyone to participate
  • good time keeping

Over the last 9 years, I have facilitated a large number of groups on a wide range of topics including:

  • health promotion (from mental health to health inequalities)
  • empowerment of older people
  • Agenda 21, and environmental management systems
  • urban and rural regeneration
  • community development skills and principles

The focus of these groups ranged from project planning, exploratory workshop discussions to multi agency partnership development.

I am confident facilitating in most settings, including the following:

  • civil service,
  • voluntary sector,
  • local government and
  • NHS and
  • European partnership projects.
